Where Not to Stay

Areas local dancers often skip for overnight stays — or only book with extra caution. Pair with your own research.

The Strip (South)

The Strip (South)

Caution

The obvious base for first-time visitors. South Strip (MGM Grand to Mandalay Bay) puts you within Uber distance of every venue and gives you the full casino experience. It's expensive but convenient, and you'll never be bored between socials. The main downside: noise levels make sleeping hard if you're in a room facing the boulevard.

Getting aroundWalkable along the Strip itself (covered skywalks between casinos). Anything off-boulevard requires an Uber.
Vs. dance areas15 min Uber to Havana Nights. 10 min to Copa Room. 12 min to LV Salsa Strip.
Cost / value trap$80-200/night hotel (weeknights), $150-400/night (Fri-Sat)
Main concernsExtremely safe 24/7 due to casino security infrastructure. Pickpocketing is rare but watch your phone in crowded casino floors.
Better alternative:Book midweek for half the price. Tuesday-Thursday at a South Strip casino hotel often costs less than a Motel 6 would on Saturday.
Downtown Fremont

Downtown Fremont

Caution

The old-school alternative. Fremont Street has been revitalized with the covered pedestrian experience, boutique hotels (The Downtown Grand, Circa), and a grittier energy that feels more real than the corporate Strip. Cheaper, quieter, and the Container Park has excellent food. The tradeoff: it's 15-25 minutes from all dance venues.

Getting aroundWalkable within the Fremont pedestrian zone. Outside that zone, Uber only — surrounding blocks are rough.
Vs. dance areas20-25 min Uber to Havana Nights. 15 min to LV Salsa Strip. 25 min to Copa Room.
Cost / value trap$50-120/night hotel
Main concernsThe covered zone is heavily patrolled and safe. Do not wander east of Las Vegas Blvd into the residential blocks after dark.
Better alternative:Stay at The Downtown Grand — it's the newest and safest option. Ask for a room facing Fremont Street for the light show (it's free nightly entertainment from your window).
Henderson

Henderson

Caution

The locals' choice. Henderson is a residential suburb 15 minutes southeast of the Strip with clean, safe streets, excellent restaurants, and significantly cheaper Airbnbs. Several local dance instructors live here and run small practice groups. If you're staying a week or more and want to live like a Vegas local, this is the move.

Getting aroundCar-dependent. You'll need Uber for everything dance-related. Walkable within shopping centers.
Vs. dance areas20 min Uber to Havana Nights. 25 min to Copa Room. 30 min to Strip venues.
Cost / value trap$40-80/night Airbnb
Main concernsOne of the safest areas in the Las Vegas metro. Quiet suburban streets, well-lit, family-oriented.
Better alternative:The Green Valley Ranch resort in Henderson has a great pool for daytime recovery and runs occasional Latin nights in their lounge — ask at the concierge.

Safety for Solo Women

Las Vegas is generally safe for solo female travelers who use common sense about where and when they walk.

Transport:

  • Uber and Lyft are the default. Rides along the Strip run $8-15 and off-Strip venues are $12-20. Surge pricing hits hard after midnight on weekends — budget $25-30 for a post-social ride.
  • The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the east side of the Strip until midnight (2 AM Fri-Sat). Useful for getting between casino-adjacent venues.
  • The Deuce bus on Las Vegas Blvd runs 24 hours ($8 day pass). Slow but reliable for Strip travel.
  • Areas to be cautious:

  • East of the Strip (between Las Vegas Blvd and Maryland Parkway) gets sketchy fast after dark. Don't walk — Uber directly.
  • North Las Vegas (north of Sahara Ave) is best avoided at night entirely.
  • Fremont Street is safe in the covered pedestrian zone but the surrounding blocks deteriorate quickly.
  • Time windows:

  • The Strip itself is safe 24/7 due to casino security and constant foot traffic.
  • Off-Strip residential areas (Henderson, Summerlin) are safe but dead quiet at night — no risk, just dark and empty.
  • Useful apps: Uber, Lyft for transport. The casino hotel concierge apps (MGM, Caesars) track your location and connect to hotel security. bSafe app for personal safety alerts.

At the socials: The Vegas dance community is tight and self-regulating. Creeps get called out fast. If anyone makes you uncomfortable, tell the organizer — they take it seriously.
